Knowledge made redundant !
Is it the death of knowledge ?
Has the advent of Internet and Google sounded the deathknell for attaining knowledge..Has the need to assimilate facts and data been decimated by the 'on demand ' nature of Internet .
If you remember 'The Matrix' ,the character of Trinity downloads the construct for flying a military chopper ..Is this the future ?
The human brain has an enormous untapped capacity to hold and process data ....but wht it lacks is a decent command and control structure. You dont exactly remember whatever you want to.,,and even if u do ..it fails you at the most crucial time :( ..
Internet is somethin similar in structure hundereds of thousands of server holding terabytes of data...and uske paas GOOGLE hai !!
The question is 'whether we need to store all that information in our brains ,especially when we are kinda lousy at it '?What is the way ahead for learning and cognition ?

knowdlege is not power...the application of knowdlege is power...knowdlege is just potential power ..like money in the bank :)
What I dream is somehow v make the need 2 remember data redundant( i suck at cramming up...dun ask how i did my engineering ;))..just like google has indexed the worlds data..if somethin like tht comes of for the brain,...imagine..the speed and capactiry of the brain and the retrival efficiency of google...imagine not having 2 attend those history lectures ..not having 2 cram up Mendeleev's periodic table and what not...would life be much more easier..it would be the great equaliser..people could attain specific skill 'on demand'...communicating with telepathy...brain directly getting a feed of saas bahu (ewwwwwwww)
On the other hand ...we would be interfering with free will...but thtz for the moralists 2 debate
Looks like you have some association with ISB. Could you please give the details - post it on my blog if possible.
Nice one Kapil...
Maybe a great knowledge repository boradcasted at different frequencies and depending on the need the mind can tune into it!! And a fixed frequency where the indexing of the frequency and its content is listed !! So the mind can visit the fixed frequency and then search for the frequency depending on the content required !!
by the way your blog design rocks !!
I read an intresting article once said that if v had a method to store info in the way our DNA stores it...it would take something a size of just a FOOTBALL to hold all the knowdlege there is in the ENTIRE WORLD
well ur idea of transmission of knowdlege is fine ..but can u imagine the sheer amt of frequencies tht wud required cnsidering all the info thrz in the world, how would they b catalouged and secured.. wht bout interference frm othr signals :)..N more importantly how credible would that info be..thr r trust issue with wikipedia even...n how would one control the process .
And the ethical issues .we don't need to know everything. Its even dangerous .Imagine a criminal downloading info on how 2 make explosives or terrorists identifying senstive areas..
Our brain can hold enormous data ,processes faster than anything, the sad part is the organization bit .From what i see ,we will have two choices .The simpler choice of relying totally on machines for our info..or the other
hand it would not be the brain, but the computer as we know would be made redundant,Maybe a simple chip implant or gene manipulation .Humans have stopped evolving naturally ,maybe artificial evolution is the future..
History has shown us that it is not the most logical or perfect option that becomes accepted . Windows is the preferred OS even though its a nightmare and Mac's OS relegated as 'not for us'..Lets see how this pans out
I have a soultion to your cause.
Do brain dump to your laptop and install google Desktop ;-)
hah..well actuallt thtz a point...ppl use external aids to remember appointments etc..hmmm so mayb itz bout time v outsource our brainz 2 ;)
Hey just came across your blog and the post seemed very close to my heart coz I have thought along these lines for a long time now. To top all that I am also a quizzer and thats a pursuit being pretty much killed by the internet, especially Google. So I came up with this blog called: http://inquizzitivegoogle.blogspot.com/
You can check that out, one of the remaining places where Google can help you, but not kill the joy of knowing!
Great post btw.
P.S: I myself work for Google!!
thkz Suhel...glad 2 knw tht u liked the post...its evn bttr tht ppl are responding wid thr interpretations of the knowdlege challenge ..thinkin bout the future is both excitin n scary ...i guess Matrix trio has a profound impact on my sensibilities and my profession gives me the xtra push 2 dwell in2 the recesses of the human mind...knowdlege is a double edged sword ,something tht raised our stature from tht of cavemen to civilized citizenry ...but it was knowdlege ;)tht got us evicted frm the garden of eden in the first place...v r walkin on tht edge n v have to tread carefully ..
Dude before it sounds like my oscar acceptance speech leeme wind it up..
Being a quizzer myself i often feel tht googleization has killed the charm in accumulating trivial knowdlege ..I still rmmbr i as a lil boy i knew bout dinosaurs lng b4 Jurassic Park n thn suddenly evry kid strtd 2 talk bout T Rex like it was T for tiger ...I felt cheated :p(waise im much bttr at handlin n sharin knowdlege now..at tht time i thot it was gods way of compensating me 4 my lack of good looks ;p)
..google has indeed made life much bttr but also taken some challenge n charm out of it...discovering some new fact or tidbit doesnt evoke tht Aha anymore :(
i guess u didnt notice but the inquizzitive blog is alrdy on my blogroll..
Google is a grt organization n i read tht it has a zero percent attiration..Spks volumes for the ppl who run the show thr..In this age n Time ...hats off sirs !!
ps: I wish I was workin 4 google 2 ;)
Can I have my brother back..I request you..I love him a lot..Do not chat with him hence forth..We all want him..

I thought of "Knowledge of Dead" and googled it and of course it's been done.
Of course the memorization of facts and accumulation of knowledge seems not as useful now, although to take that knowledge and make good decisions, well, people are making stupid decisions as ever, so it hasn't helped with that.
Kapil's comment that humans have stopped evolving naturally was very interesting, evolving was a prerequisite for survival, so have we stopped evolving? I see a few around here that have stopped or are maybe going backwards.
Or is evolution a condition due to our curiosity and quest for knowledge.
I am now merely a brain in a jar with liquid nutrients hooked up with wire to my computer. Life is good now, I don't need to go to the bathroom or sleep, I have cybersex with world class models, I know everything, I can live forever, I am a world class athlete...
I have an old caretaker that changes the nutritional liquid in my jar once a week, it's great, here she comes now,.. wait, it's not the usual mixture, crap she's putting acid in the jar, it's a trap!!! I want my body back..........good bye.......
@peter...we are guilty of confusing information with knowledge and knowledge with wisdom... wisdom comes from applying knowledge and accepting results and thtz the area we flounder in...
as for evolution, it is adapting ourselves to the the environment...again we are it the other way...adapting the environment to suit us....eg airconditioning, hot water baths refridgration
Your blog keeps getting better and better! Your older articles are not as good as newer ones you have a lot more creativity and originality now keep it up!

I want my computer to work at the speed of thought, it's so slow. I want to go faster and faster and do the work of ten people so that the other nine starve and I can work all the time and pretend that I'm having a good life. I want to be able to talk to my car and it has a great personality and understands when I'm having a bad day. It dials numbers for me so I don't have to look at a midget screen and cause an accident. Fully a 1/3 of accidents now are caused by people texting and not watching the road, wow why are we using such archaic technology for such a common task?
